TPF-13 Correlation for Transition to Shear-dominated Flow Regime for Shellside Flows

Abstract:

In adiabatic air-water experiments in the Transparent Shell-and-tube Exchanger (TSTX), we acquired visualization data for 52 different shellside geometrical configurations and developed a database of flow regime maps. These maps revealed the variation of shellside flow regime boundaries with key geometric parameters, including baffle spacing, baffle cut and orientation, and bundle type. Based on these studies, we propose a correlation for the boundary between shear-dominated and stratified regions on the HTRI shellside flow regime map.
