FH-5 Fired Heater Research: Two-phase Flow in Vertical Serpentine Loop

Adiabatic air-water studies were completed in a transparent vertical serpentine loop with a 12.7-cm internal pipe diameter and six vertical upflow and downflow sections with straight lengths exceeding 6 m. Liquid holdup in the vertical runs tends to dominate the overall pressure drop. This study focuses on flow visualization and pressure drop measurements to understand flow stability and liquid holdup. A new liquid holdup model for the vertical upflow section is considered for implementation in Xfh and Xfh Ultra.
