    Xphe Workshop  (US$450)

Instructors: LiDong Huang and Matthew Berger

If you work with plate-and-frame geometries, Xphe® is the software for you. In this workshop you will discover how to use HTRI’s graphical tool for rating plate-and-frame heat exchanger designs and for conducting comparative studies of plate-and-frame versus shell-and-tube design solutions for specific applications. You will learn how Xphe handles single-phase and two-phase heat transfer and pressure drop for common corrugated plate patterns in a variety of configurations, from single-pass, single-plate arrangements to multipass, mixed plate designs. You will also leave with a better understanding of the analytical methods used in Xphe. Note that crossflow plate-and-block type arrangements are not accommodated in Xphe and are therefore not covered in this workshop.

    Key Topics

    • Overview of Xphe capabilities and applications (single-/multiple-plate types and passes, non-Newtonian fluid specification, port maldistribution, and more...)
    • Process specifications for rating, simulation, and design
    • Guidelines for specifying fluid properties
    • Geometry input
    • Introduction to HTRI analysis methods

    Suggested Participants

Process and thermal design engineers that evaluate plate-and-frame heat exchanger performance

    Course credits: 6 hours (PDH/CEU)

    Xist Workshop  (US$450)

Instructors: LiDong Huang and Matthew Berger

This workshop is devoted to the shell-and-tube exchanger geometries handled only by Xist. The course focuses on the extensive options available in Xist and how you can use these methods effectively to solve several example problems. You will leave the class knowing how to take full advantage of the features this robust tool offers.

    Key Topics

    • Overview of Xist interface and the benefits of HTRI methods
    • Process specifications rules for rating, simulation, and design
    • Guidelines for specifying fluid properties
    • Description of Xist geometry input parameters and their defaults
    • Interpretation of Xist outputs for validation of unit performance

    Suggested Participants

Designers of shell-and-tube heat exchangers and process engineers who evaluate their performance

    Course credits: 6 hours (PDH/CEU)

    Thermosiphon Reboilers Short Course  (US$650)

Instructors: LiDong Huang and Matthew Berger

This short course is dedicated to the discussion of thermosiphon reboilers. Model thermosiphons in Xist using detailed guidelines for piping and fluid property specification. Investigate thermosiphon operational issues and learn how to screen for these using Xist. This course provides a checklist for future design review.

    Key Topics

    • Common types of distillation column reboiler
    • Once-through vs. recirculating thermosiphon reboilers
    • Vertical vs. horizontal configurations
    • Modeling thermosiphons in Xist
    • Piping and fluid property specification
    • Operational issues
    • Modeling turndown operation

    Suggested Participants

Engineers who design, rate or troubleshoot thermosiphon reboilers

    Course credits: 6 hours (PDH/CEU)

    Vibration Analysis Short Course  (US$650)

Instructors: LiDong Huang and Matthew Berger

A must for anyone who evaluates the vibration potential of shell-and-tube heat exchangers! In this course, you learn about vibration mechanisms in shell-and-tube heat exchangers and Xist methods to analyze vibration severity. Most importantly, you discover corrective measures to mitigate damage.

    Key Topics

    • Introduction to vibration phenomena
    • Flow-induced vibration (fluidelastic instability, vortex shedding, turbulent buffeting, acoustic vibration)
    • Design options to mitigate vibration
    • Field fixes
    • Xist Vibration Report
    • Example application and case studies

    Suggested Participants

Design and plant engineers responsible for the mechanical condition of shell-and-tube heat exchangers

    Course credits: 6 hours (PDH/CEU)
