Abstract:

This report contains the derivation of a new mechanism-based nucleate boiling suppression factor and describes the development of two correlations for the shellside convective boiling mass transfer coefficient. The first mass transfer correlation applies only to binary mixtures and requires the binary diffusivity and a Schmidt number. The second correlation is expressed in terms of the mixture boiling range and applies to multicomponent mixtures. The new suppression factor and mass transfer correlations improve the comprehensive heat transfer model for shellside boiling described in Report BX-5. The heat transfer coefficients from shellside horizontal thermosiphon reboiler data are well predicted by the model, producing an error ratio of 0.995 with a standard deviation of 0.143.
